Is Homophily why Golden is like it is?

Birds of a feather…

Homophily - the tendency for people to seek out or be attracted to those who are similar to themselves.

Just about every time I listen to one of my favorite podcasts, Hidden Brain, I think “I need to share this with X, where X could be a friend or relative whom I think will particularly get something out of it. Recently when listening to “Who’s Your Inner Circle”, I kept finding myself saying that this desire to be with others like us has guided Golden’s growth in a way. Some people say that Golden has changed a lot, and not for the better when they say that. I would argue, after listening to this, that a class divide that used to exist and was normal, has increased. It has become more stratified, but with more people who are affluent, and fewer who are less affluent (even if measured by family wealth, and not income), and while maybe not desirable, comes from a natural progression of small decisions made by individuals. As a result of this Homophily, seeking out others like us, but also an aging out of interests and connections, what we seem to be missing are those fraternal groups that used to do some functions that now government is expected to do. Please don’t just take that comment at face value, click on the link above, listen to the show, and then feel free to tell me what you think.
