Compost Transfer Station on line

A metal building, $2.5M (?) with laser heat sensor fire suppression system

Compost Transfer Station

Republic Industries, besides having a landfill near HW93 and HW72, also recycle tons of concrete, steel, asphalt, and transfer recycling to other facilities. Our yard and kitchen compost waste comes to this facility that serves 150K households in the area. It used to be that it was then consolidated and trucked to Bennett where it is composted. However the contamination rate is pretty high and they have a landfill right there, so instead it is sorted, the garbage removed, and then it is consolidated and hauled to Bennett. I attended the ribbon cutting for the new facility and was joined by Rachel Zenzinger, County Commissoner, other elected officials, and muckity mucks from Republic.

An all electric hauler

They also showed off, but did not discuss much, an all electric hauler, they have 14 out of a fleet of about 400 vehicles.

This large machine spans the whole building. At the near, left end is a “hopper” into which a large bulldozer will lift about 5-6 yards of waste. The rotating drum, in this case with a half inch screen, rotates while an auger drives the compost is driven into it, above a belt. Items that fall through the belt are sent to a bin for consolidation. Items too large to pass through are sent to another belt that makes the waste pile to the far right. They also have a 3” screen rotating drum. The model is a T521, because the drum is 5’ in diameter, and 21 feet long. So, all in all this will allow for a much better product (composted compost). One statistic I remember from the studies in 2022 on the need for this facility, is that the demand for finished compost is 5X the supply available in Colorado.
