I am a big fan of the expression, “it is better to teach a person to fish, than it is to give them a fish”. Likewise when someone meets me and hears I’m their city councilor, they often think of an “issue” they want me to fix. I just as often say, “here’s who you should call on that.” In fact, in our weak council strong city manager model, most issues that people face day to day are the responsibility (both legally and in fact) of the city manager or his direct reports. Strategy, direction, priorities and hiring the city manager are key duties of city council, but not fixing potholes or street lights. So, next time you need something remember to flip open your latest Informer, to get contact information for your issue.
